Maple syrup was first collected and used by the indigenous peoples of North America, and the practice was adopted by European settlers, who gradually refined production methods. Maple syrup is popular as a condiment for pancakes, waffles, French toast, oatmeal or porridge. It is also used as an ingredient in baking and as a sweetener or flavoring agent. Culinary experts have praised its unique flavor.

Bonhomie Acres

Bonhomie Acres is on Quaker Road in Fredericktown, Ohio, where maple syrup making reaches back to the 1800s. William and Kate Brown built the farm’s current sugarhouse in 1948, continuing work that many neighboring farms eventually stopped doing.

Earlier generations gathered sap with horses and wagons and boiled it over a wood-fired evaporator. The farm later added tubing systems to gather sap, while the next generation learned the work of making syrup.

Pancakes are one place to start, but they don’t need to be the only reason to open the bottle. Try a little in oatmeal, whisk some into a dressing, or use it when roasting vegetables. Keep the amount to your own taste.
